Product Marketing Engineer

  • Position Summary

    Arcanum Alloys is searching for a Product Marketing Engineer, a hybrid role best suited for an individual with strong technical acumen who is naturally comfortable interfacing with customers to find product solutions. The individual should expect to use their technical skills to obtain advanced knowledge of Arcanum’s Surface Optimized Diffusion (SODA™) platform and become an internal subject matter expert on new or existing applications.  The ideal candidate will be technically adept, creative, curious, personable, detail oriented, accountable, and internally driven to create new products and business using Arcanum’s technology.  This person should be comfortable finding appropriate strategies in ambiguous situations.  The ideal candidate is comfortable with communicating technical concepts to both technical and non-technical customers and internal stakeholders.  This position is located near Grand Rapids in western Michigan.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Define product functionalities, specifications, and value propositions of new products
      • Source and engage potential customers
      • Collect and distill voice of customer via sales team and/or direct customer engagement
      • Collect data and assign TAM, SAM, SOM values to new markets and applications
      • Present value propositions to the team in product development meetings
      • Design alloys and assist research group with experimental design and measurement
      • Become subject matter expert on any regulations associated with new products
      • Identify publications and lead content preparation for external media publications
    • Demonstrate material functionalities in simulated, relevant, and operational environments
      • Work with internal and external stakeholders to drive the product validation process
      • Set up and execute internal and external material testing systems as needed
      • Report material functionality development progress in product development meetings
      • Assist in publication of product data sheets to convey performance data to customers
    • Create cost-performance production models for various new products
      • Research new supplier opportunities and set up meetings to ascertain costs and capabilities
      • Validate new suppliers by representing VOC and working with research and operations teams to create products with robust production windows
      • Lead production trial planning to produce new alloys at pilot- and full-scale
      • Participate in production trials to get first-hand experience with production constraints and opportunities
      • Create sample- and trial-production sales quotes as needed
    • Contribute to intellectual property development and licensing processes
      • Literature/patent review and analysis
      • Internal/external presentations covering markets, applications, alloy products, and processes

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or BA/BS Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry or other STEM field of study
    • 5+ years technology engineering or materials development experience
    • 2+ years in a sales or marketing experience
    • Proficiency using MS Excel and building basic cost-models
    • A demonstrated ability to generate ideas on paper and demo them in lab/production environments
    • Experience with project management and project management tools, preferably Zoho
    • Desire to work in a fast-paced environment, both with others and independently, to meet objectives
    • Experience influencing outcomes using data, not authority
    • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, up to but not limited to 33%

    Preferred Qualifications in addition to required qualifications (can make this a Sr. level position)

    • In addition to the required education, a BA in business or marketing; MBA; and/or an advanced (MS, PhD) degree Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry or other STEM field of study
    • 5+ years technical sales or marketing experience
    • Deep relationships with a broad range of production suppliers, technology, and manufacturing firms
    • Manufacturing production experience and supply optimization
    • Additive manufacturing experience
    • Thermal treatment industry experience
    • Proficient in computer programming: R, Python, C++
    • Proficient in simulation and CAD: COMSOL, AVL Fire, JMAG, Solidworks, AutoCAD or similar

  • Position Summary

      We are seeking an experienced professional to lead supplier quality engineering for Arcanum Alloys, a revolutionary provider of engineered surfaces for the steel industry. Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, you will use your quality and process engineering skills to develop six sigma processes and ensure process and product quality in an outsourced setting. You must enjoy working in a fast paced startup company environment where creativity, speed, initiative and cross-functional teamwork are required to succeed.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Build and foster strong relationships with suppliers with proactive communications, frequent meetings, and visits, 30-50% travel expected.
    • Develop a deep technical understanding of product functional requirements, and manufacturing processes and practices to ensure appropriate process controls are in place and being practiced. Assist team in developing comprehensive process FMEAs and Points of quality Assurance (PoAs).
    • Qualify supplier processes using PPAP and APQP. Work with suppliers to ensure manufacturing process consistency using Statistical Process Control.
    • Work with supplier and Arcanum engineers, design, run and analyze DOEs using commercially available packages like JMP. Develop and optimize Arcanum’s manufacturing processes to deliver high process capability and high yields
    • Utilize supplier quality system audits to assess compliance to control plans and quality system requirements at suppliers. Drive corrective action to improve supplier quality systems to meet the needs of Arcanum Alloys.
    • Implement appropriate metrology tools and certify inspection methods at suppliers to enable “Dock-to-Stock”

    Requirements

    • BS or higher in a Technical discipline, Materials Science, Metallurgy a plus.
    • 15+ years of process engineering, design and/or quality experience in complex products and processes based on advanced materials technologies
    • 10+ years of relevant quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment. Steel industry experience a big plus
    • Experience with supplier quality planning, supplier qualification using APQP and PPAP. Experience in controlling processes using Statistical Process Control
    • Strong analytical skills with ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
    • Ability to clearly communicate and present status, action, recommendations, and other technical information at all levels.
    • Ability to build strong relationships with and influence supplier personnel.
